Artist Spotlight: The Slaps

Artist Spotlight

In 2017, in the dorms of DePaul University in Lincoln Park, Chicago, during their freshman year, an indie band called The Slaps was formed. Since then, they’ve toured internationally, released multiple EPs, and gathered over 140k monthly listeners on Spotify.

But the story actually starts way back, with long-time best friends and Lexington, Kentucky natives Rand Kelley (lead vocals and guitar) and Ramsey Bell (bass). They met when they were five years old, grew up going to the same schools, and even played in the school band together. But it was only when they met Josh Resing (drums) that The Slaps were really born.

Touring since the get-go, the trio really values playing in small, intimate venues and the connection they’re able to build with fans when they’re on the road. They’ve successfully created a cult-like following with fans who consistently make sure their shows sell out.

That success on the road has also landed them touring slots alongside the band Post Animal and even with Stranger Things actor, and now musician, Finn Wolfhard, where they not only opened for him but also played as his backing band.

The Slaps pride themselves on being a music-first band that does it for passion, and every song includes collaboration from each member. The result is a unique jazz-rock-indie sound. You can hear their signature style on their latest release, “Wettest Wing,” which came out this November.

The band is proof that with work ethic, passion for music, and a focus on touring and fan connection, an indie band truly can reach success.
