Artist Spotlight: Sierra Spirit
Native American and raised in Oklahoma, Sierra Spirit’s life changed when she picked up a guitar for the first time in 2020.
At the time, Sierra was on a pre-med track, studying to become a doctor. Music was just a hobby to de-stress. She taught herself piano and guitar, but it was when she started playing guitar that she discovered her love and talent for songwriting.
Influenced by her roots and her upbringing — growing up within driving distance of both her tribe’s reservations, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and the Keetoowah Band of Cherokees — Sierra found inspiration in Americana, folk, and country music. Blending those influences with artists like Phoebe Bridgers, one of the first musicians she learned to play on guitar, her unique indie rock sound was born.
Now based in NYC, Sierra uses her storytelling to share pieces of home, community, family, and her upbringing through her lyrics. She celebrates being an Indigenous artist and hopes to inspire Native American creatives while sharing her culture with the world.
Her EP cointoss, released last year, has already gathered over 500k streams on Spotify. Earlier this year, she toured as an opener for David Gray. Sierra is living proof that staying true to yourself and your roots can resonate and inspire more people than you’d ever expect.
Sierra’s new single Lift a Finger, from her upcoming sophomore EP, offers a deeply emotional look into her perspective and hints at the powerful work still ahead. Out now on all platforms, it cements her place as one of indie’s most promising rising voices.
