Artist Spotlight: Mokita
Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and producer John-Luke Carter, known as Mokita, makes electronic-leaning pop rooted in songwriting, with acoustic elements woven throughout.
Originally from Virginia, Carter moved to North Carolina at 14. The transition led him to spend more time on his own and, in turn, more time with music. He gravitated toward a local radio station, 88.1, which blended alternative, pop punk, and grunge outside of the mainstream. He began recording hours of broadcasts onto tapes, developing an early habit of discovering music independently.
His influences reflect that range. John Mayer, Switchfoot, Brand New, Jimmy Eat World, Nirvana, Ben Folds, and Eminem all shaped his approach to melody and lyrics. Today, his sound sits in a chill pop space, pulling from hip-hop, folk, and Americana.
Before fully focusing on his own project, Carter built a foundation behind the scenes with writing and production credits for Stephen Puth, Zac Brown Band, and Matoma. He broke through as Mokita with his 2019 single “Colorblind,” followed by a steady run of releases, including a 2022 EP.
His latest single, “easy come, easy go,” introduces a more restrained, introspective tone centered on timing and emotional clarity in relationships. It reflects a broader shift in approach, with less overthinking and more instinct.
Creating has remained the constant throughout. Even as his audience has grown, the focus has stayed on making work that feels right, rather than chasing specific outcomes.
Now 10 years into doing music full-time, Carter is stepping into a new phase with a clearer mindset and renewed energy around releasing. With a fresh batch of music on the way and a more instinct-driven approach, what comes next feels open and worth paying attention to.
