Artist Spotlight: Kevin Walkman
Kevin Walkman is a Philadelphia based indie pop/rock artist known for writing songs about taboo queer experiences. He started making music in college with a friend after realizing how cathartic it was to write about his life experiences, and how rewarding it is to have other people connect with those experiences.
“Billy Doesn’t Want You” draws on a familiar queer experience of navigating a ‘straight’ man who only initiates contact when intoxicated or seeking physical intimacy. It tackles the painful cycle of internalized shame, lingering homophobia, and the thrill of the chase that traps many in these one-sided dynamics. The track is an unapologetic, energetic, anthemic reality check that pulls no punches and cuts straight to the truth.
Rather than pointing fingers, the track shifts into a deeply introspective space, exploring the shared culpability within these toxic dynamics. It examines how the narrator's own desires and willingness to engage fuel the cycle, turning a critique of another’s behavior into a raw confession of self sabotage. By acknowledging that it takes two to participate in the chase, the song highlights how internalized shame can make a person complicit in their own objectification.
